A Simple Teaching Sequence

Start with the sentence pattern your student needs. Introduce the parts, model a sentence, and support the student as they combine the word cards. Move to the next pattern when they are ready.

1. Build: Choose cards and place them on the sentence mat.
2. Read: Say or read the complete sentence aloud.
3. Write: Write the sentence, including a capital letter and period.

Skills and Uses

Practice word order, subject and verb identification, direct and indirect objects, syntax, expressive language, and writing complete sentences. Use the activities in speech therapy, language intervention, grammar lessons, small groups, or classroom centers.

Print and use again: Laminate the mats and cards for repeated use in your own classroom or treatment sessions. Use a pencil or dry-erase marker as appropriate.
